Staff and faculty are central to Pomona's sustainability
efforts. Whether you're talking about sustainability in the
classroom or living it in your office, Pomona cannot be
truly sustainable without the efforts of staff and faculty.
Green Working
For more tips on how to be green in your office and
on campus, see these guides:

Office Program - things you can do, case studies, and
more!
Green Computing Guide Academic Projects
If you have students looking to write a
thesis or a term paper about campus sustainability issues or
are interested in assigning such topics for class projects, the Sustainability Integration Office can help you pick a topic and
connect you with the information you need. Your academic
work might be what the College needs to move forward with a
specific problem or technology!Past academic projects that have helped the College move
forward have included:
- Capacity for photo-voltaic arrays on the roofs of
College buildings (including a cost-benefit analysis)
- Opportunities for heating Haldeman pool using solar
hot water heating
- Thermal imaging of buildings to determine
inefficiencies in insulation
- Designing a "Sustainability Pledge" program for all
incoming students
- Assessing opportunities for cost- and energy-savings
through the use of more efficient lighting solutions

for more information about possible topics for projects and
papers and for questions about available data.
How to Get Involved
Sustainability
Integration Office
Are you interested in being involved in a project?
Have questions about sustainability or what you should be
doing? Want to talk about sustainability in your class but
want some help preparing information? Here's what the Sustainability Integration Office can do to help
- Answer questions about sustainability - for instance,
the Registrar's Office recently emailed to ask about
what sort of envelopes they might want to be buying to
mail out transcripts. A faculty member emailed to ask
why the coffee cups with Catering orders are disposable
- the Sustainability Integration Office can assist with these
sorts of questions.
- Process sustainability complaints - see a broken
sprinkler? Someone leaving their lights on all night?
Let us know.
- Assist in preparing lecture materials or resources for
sustainability-related projects.
- Help to develop project topics for theses, term
papers, or other class projects, particularly those
related to campus sustainability topics. Food, energy,
water, landscaping - whether a general study or an
analysis of a particular technology or effort, campus
sustainability issues make for challenging and rewarding
academic projects.
- Lecture about Pomona's environmental impact. Talking
about stormwater and want to know about what Pomona's
stormwater impacts are? The Sustainability Coordinator
can prepare a lecture and presentation about
sustainability topics at the College.
- Lecture about areas of expertise - Bowen Patterson
Close, the current director of the Sustainability
Integration Office, has experience in topics related to:
urban planning, green building, land use, strategic
planning and communications, food systems, and
agriculture topics.
President's Advisory Committee
on Sustainability
This committee was formed by President Oxtoby in
2006 and is the official College committee for advising on
sustainability issues. This committee is responsible for an
annual report about the progress of sustainability at the
College.
PACS has approximately five staff and faculty members each year,
but you are always welcome to stop by meetings to see
what's happening and how the process works or to be an
unofficial member of the committee.
For more information about attending a PACS meeting or
being a part of PACS, contact the Sustainability Integration
Office
at
bowen.patterson@pomona.edu or the Chair of the Committee
(currently,
Professor Charles Taylor,
charles.taylor@pomona.edu).
You can see more about PACS, including membership and
activities, here.
Other Committees and Task
Forces
Committees and task forces are often created
throughout the year to discuss specific issues, such as the
design and programming of a specific construction project or
building, or to accomplish a specific task. Examples of
recent committees and task forces include:
- North Campus Residence Halls Advisory Committee
- Board of Trustees Sustainability Task Force
- Committee on Social Responsibility (proxy voting on
investments)
Faculty and staff are chosen for these committees based on general
interest and involvement in related campus activities. |
