Housing
All students living on campus must check in at the Office of Campus Life upon arrival to receive a room key. A Student Information Form and a Health Insurance/Medical Information form must be completed at the time of check in. ID cards that were issued last year are still valid and will not be replaced except for lost or damaged cards. Students who need ID cards will obtain them at the Office of Campus Life.

Board Options

Based upon the work the ASPC Food Committee conducted in the spring, Pomona will be offering a new set of meal plan options effective fall 2009: you can choose between 4 meal plans – 12,14,16,19 – and you have a choice of 3 amounts of Board Plus dollars for each plan. Several meal plan options were eliminated; we have returned ALL students to the default plan of 16 meals/$160 Board Plus dollars. If you want to choose another plan, you will need to do that this fall on myPomona.

Meal Plan Options:

$6,038.00     19 meals per week plus $240 Board Plus dollars per semester
$5,878.00     19 meals per week plus $160 Board Plus dollars per semester

$4,224.00     12 meals per week plus $80 Board Plus dollars per semester

Please note: The fees reflect the cost for the academic year.

Pomona College also will be offering a 5 meal per week plan plus $80 Board Plus per semester (at a cost of $2,192.00 per semester), which will be available by application only through the Office of Campus Life. Students living off campus or living in the Cottages are eligible to participate in this meal plan. Other students with documented dietary needs or off-campus activities requiring absence from the campus during meal times may also apply.

As you know, you may eat your meals in the dining halls on any of the five campuses. Board plus dollars can be used to purchase additional dining hall meals or to treat friends when they visit the campus. If you prefer, you may use your Board plus dollars to eat in any of the informal dining sites on the five Colleges:  the Coop Fountain at Pomona, the Sagehen Cafe at Pomona, the Mudd Hole at Harvey Mudd, the Motley at Scripps, the Hub at CMC, the Shakedown at Pitzer, or the Grove House at Pitzer. These restaurants are open different hours than the dining halls, often until late in the evening, so you will be able to eat whenever you are hungry or whenever you want to socialize with friends on the five campuses.

REMINDER: The brochures/applications for CUC Student Health Insurance Plan and Fire/Theft Insurance require your immediate attention.

Health Insurance
The Claremont Colleges maintain Student Health Services and Monsour Counseling Center for students. Services are available during regular business hours, Monday through Friday when classes are in session. Preventive medicine and health awareness are stressed and consultation and treatment by physicians, nurses and psychologists are available without charge. A charge is made for medicines, laboratory tests, special supplies and consultation; treatment by specialists in the community are arranged by the Student Health Service, but are paid for by students, not by the College. Emergency health services for serious injuries or for after hours or weekend treatment are available at two nearby hospitals (within 5 miles) and several urgent care clinics, again at the student’s expense. The free medical services provided by the College are limited. Serious injuries, illness serious enough to warrant hospitalization and many medications can be quite expensive. It is important that you review your family health coverage.

Claremont Colleges Student Health Insurance Plan

This year, the Claremont Colleges changed the insurance plan to better meet student needs. More treatments are covered at 100% when provided in network. The PPO network has remained the same. The insurance policy covers treatment for doctor visits, emergency care, medical and surgical treatment, diagnostic procedures, laboratory tests, treatment of mental and nervous disorders, specialty consultations, and hospitalization (including inpatient hospitalization for mental health/psychiatric care and chemical dependency) while you are at Pomona College. The CUC student health insurance plan has also added some preventative care, including coverage for flu shots and STI/HIV testing at SHS. It covers you for all those services while you’re a student at Pomona College or traveling in the United States or abroad. It has a maximum benefit that is at least $100,000 per injury or sickness. It covers injuries resulting from the practice or play of intramural/club sports. The fee is $1,224 for the period August 7, 2009 to August 27, 2010. See the brochure for more details.

Every student should be covered by some form of medical insurance. Proof of insurance is required for all students who have entered Pomona in fall 2008 or later, and for all students participating in intercollegiate, club sports, or OTL. Please complete the Enrollment/Waiver form by July 10, 2009 if you entered Pomona in the fall of 2008. Students who entered Pomona before fall 2008 will need to complete the application and send the payment to the insurance carrier directly if you would like to enroll in the plan. Please visit the Claremont Colleges Student Health Insurance Plan website for more information. Medical insurance is not provided by the College. The student or parents should examine their insurance policy to determine if it provides an adequate amount of coverage, that it does not exclude the student because of her or his age, and does not exclude coverage for intercollegiate athletics, club sports, outdoor trips, or for whatever activity is planned.

Financial Assistance for the Claremont College Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan
Pomona College recognizes that the cost of coverage in the Claremont College Student Accident and Insurance Program (SASIP) may cause financial hardship for some students and their families. If a student does not have medical insurance which meets the minimum standards of SASIP, and is in need of financial assistance to cover the cost of the premium, the student should submit a written request for assistance to the Financial Aid Office. The request will take into consideration the student’s financial aid eligibility based on the schedule posted below. In each subsequent year at Pomona College, the student will be eligible to renew their accident and sickness insurance and will also be able to renew their grant and loan assistance to cover the cost of the premium. Any questions regarding financial assistance should be directed to the Financial Aid Office

Personal Property Insurance

Pomona College does not assume responsibility for loss or damage to personal property belonging to students. Parents and students should inspect their insurance policies to determine whether the limits and conditions are sufficient to cover student property in Claremont.

Loss or theft of personal property from student residence hall rooms does occur, aggravated by the fact that students often do not lock the doors to their rooms while away from them. It is important to both exercise caution at Pomona as one would at home, and to maintain adequate personal insurance to cover items that may be lost, stolen or damaged. Pomona College does not cover loss to students’ personal property. During vacations, students are urged to check their valuables into one of the locked alarmed storage rooms available on campus. These rooms provide an additional measure of safety, but the College does not assume liability for losses, which may occur. Please go to
www.nssi.com for more details.

ReCoop

The student-run ReCoop thrift store sells used furniture, appliances, and other dorm room items. ReCoop store will feature a variety of used items, including fridges, lamps, rugs, fans, hangers, furniture, and more. ReCoop will host a large sale on move-in day, plus their regular store hours throughout the semester. ReCoop is located in Walker Residence Hall Lounge, though their large sales are often elsewhere.

Zip Car

Pomona has contracted with Zipcar to provide rental cars for students on campus. While the College does allow all continuing students to bring cars to campus, we strongly encourage students to identify alternative means of local transportation. Zipcar is a service that rents cars (including Honda Civic Hybrids) to students 18 and over with good driving records. The rental costs are $7.00 hourly or $66 for the day after a $35 membership fee is paid. Zipcar allows students to have short-term use of a car for shopping, medical appointments or other personal errands. For more information about membership eligibility, or to sign up, please go to http://www.zipcar.com/pomona/.

Parking on Campus
Due to the construction taking place on campus in 2009-10, the number of parking spaces available on campus will be significantly reduced. The College has taken the step of not allowing first years to bring cars, and is working with Zipcar to place additional cars on campus as the need is demonstrated. In April, Zipcar placed two additional cars on Pomona’s campus in the Harrison parking lot adjacent to the academic quad, bringing the total number of Zipcars to eleven (seven in the Tranquada lot, two up north by the Joint Sciences building, and two in the Harrison lot). The College is working to identify additional lots for student parking. Updates will be available on the Office of Campus Life website. Students are required to register their vehicles with Campus Safety. Each student is allowed to have one car and pay a registration fee of $60 per semester with Campus Safety.

Telephone Service and Voicemail
Students who do not have a cell phone may request the installation of a land line (room extension). This request may be made through the Office of Campus Life upon arrival at the beginning of the semester. Students may sign up for voice-mail service on this extension at no charge. Pay phones are located at various sites on campus. For long distance calls, students must use a personal calling card or cell phone.

Final Exam Schedule

You have already received the final examination schedule from the Registrar.  On it, you will note that exams extend through the afternoon of Friday, December 18.  All residence halls will close for the fall at noon on Saturday, December 19.  Please remember this when making arrangements for travel at the end of the semester.  The Academic Procedures Committee frowns upon petitions requesting final exam changes because of premature travel reservations.
