Always a good student, Kara Toles only disliked one
subject in high school: history.
That changed after she came to Pomona College and someone
encouraged her to take Professor Sidney Lemelle’s class
“Slavery and Freedom in the New World.”
“I was electrified,” says Toles. “I was being taught so many
things I’d never heard about. It was a history I could
connect with. That class opened my eyes to seeing things in
a new perspective.”
At Pomona, Toles has been involved in the Students of Color Alliance and
has also served as a mentor through the Office of Black
Student Affairs. After a period of soul-searching, she wound
up switching her major to Black Studies. “I’ve done a lot of
growing here,’’ she says. “I’ve developed a social
consciousness I didn’t have before.”
She thrives in Pomona’s small classes. “I actually had a
class with six people this semester. I loved it so much
because I ended up really knowing the people I had class
with and really getting to know the professor.”
“You have the opportunity to interact with people on such a
personal level,’’ she says. “It’s just so much more
enriching than being in a huge place where you don’t know
anyone. That’s how I feel.”
She also enjoys the social climate of Pomona. “I love the
consciousness, not only of Pomona but of California,” she
says. “I’ve really connected with a lot of people here and I
just love the environment.”
Toles has dreamed of becoming a doctor since she was 5 years
old, and plans to go on to medical school after Pomona. “If
I am going into medicine, I will be serving people out in
the world, so I need to know as much about them as I can,”
she says. “I
think by widening my horizons, Pomona will make me a better
doctor.”" |
