Past Student Films
Beginning in 2007, the Pacific Basin Institute developed a grant program to send a select group of students from Pomona College abroad during the summer months to film documentaries. With support from the generous donations of the Barbara Smith New China Film Funds and the R. Stanton Avery Lectureship Funds, sstudents are selected from a diverse pool of applicants and sent to numerous countries in Asia-Pacific to film a wide variety of subject matter and learn about film production. They subsequently spend a semester editing and creating their project upon returning to Pomona College, with the help of the PBI Archivist, in which they learn about the processes of post-production. With this grant, we aim to generate further interest in the region and its diverse cultures while giving students the opportunity to travel abroad and learn about filmmaking. Any currently enrolled student of the Claremont Colleges may apply for the grant during the spring semester of each year, when a campus-wide announcement will be posted.
