| Mission |
 |
The purpose of the Pomona College Office of Community and
Multicultural Programs (OCMP) is to cultivate a culture of
social change and social responsibility. The OCMP also seeks
to fulfill the College’s obligation to contribute to the
surrounding communities from which it receives intellectual,
academic and staffing resources. The OCMP carries out this
purpose by partnering with local communities to provide
reciprocal learning opportunities for students and local
community members.
In expanding the reaches of the classroom and by providing
opportunities to engage with local racially and ethnically
rich and economically diverse populations, the OCMP assists
in realizing the College’s educational vision of “training
the mind broadly and deeply (and) developing an intellectual
resilience that equips students for a fast-changing world.”
Exposure to and thoughtful engagement with diverse
populations in the College’s surrounding communities
strengthens students’ preparedness to lead in a
fast-changing, diverse world and provides local communities
with self-identified useful services and opportunities.
“They only are loyal to this college who, departing, bear
their added riches in trust for mankind.” James A. Blaisdell,
4th President, Pomona College

| Volunteer Center |
| |
The Volunteer Center, a joint venture of the Associated
Students of Pomona College (ASPC) and OCMP, fosters social
responsibility through community-based work, in accordance
with the mission of the college. Founded in February 1993,
the Center serves as a liaison between Pomona College and
organizations in the Los Angeles region.
Community based work is critical to furthering one's
understanding of complex issues studied in various courses.
As such, the Hart Volunteer Center seeks to promote further
understanding of the global context in which these topics
occur by facilitating participation in individual and group
activities based in the College's surrounding communities.
The center also hosts events in conjunction with the
McAlister Center's Volunteer Programs Office and with the
other Claremont Colleges.
The Sagehen Shuttle and the Volunteer Center vans can
provide transportation at no cost to Pomona students
engaging in non-paid community-based work.
Opportunities
The Pomona College Volunteer Center houses resources and
contacts for your individual and group service needs. We are
happy to assist you in identifying organizations and
community based opportunities for students, staff and
faculty. Each semester, the Volunteer Center coordinates a
variety of volunteer projects and provides information on
careers in the non-profit field. Watch the
Digester for
announcements about Volunteer Center events and
opportunities. You may also join the
Facebook TM group: Hart
Volunteer Center for announcements about ongoing activities.
