This week in Pomona-Pitzer Athletics saw the fall season come to a close with the Cross Country teams competing at the NCAA Division III Championships in Hanover, Indiana and the Men’s Water Polo team in action at the SCIAC Championships.

Men’s Cross Country placed 23rd overall out of 32 teams at the nationals, led by top 100 finishes from John Fowler ’16 (82nd) and Ben Girodias ‘15 (88th). Corey Purcella ’16, Steven Ory ’16 and Alex Johann ’14 also earned points for the Sagehens by finishing in the top 200, as Pomona-Pitzer made its second straight team appearance at the NCAAs by finishing in first place at the West Region last weekend (after a second place finish a year ago). Claire Brickson ’14 qualified on the women’s side as an individual and ran a 23:02 at nationals, finishing 169 out of 269 competitors.

Men’s Water Polo had a dramatic quarterfinal match against Chapman on Friday, winning 11-10 in sudden death overtime. The Sagehens trailed 10-8 in the second overtime, but Phillip Clayman ’16 scored to pull Pomona-Pitzer within 10-9, and Jarrod Gaut PI ’14 scored with just 0.2 seconds left to tie the score 10-10 and keep Pomona-Pitzer’s hopes alive. Ryan Higgins ’14 then followed with the game-winner in the third overtime session. Caleb Prater-Fahey ’17 had 20 saves in goal to keep the Sagehens in the match until the late comeback. Pomona-Pitzer finished fourth after falling to top-seeded Whittier in the semifinals 16-10 and to third-seeded Redlands 10-6 in the third-place match. Gaut, Higgins and Dylan O’Connell ’14 all had goals in their final collegiate matches, while Tyler Hill ’14 had 15 saves.

Men’s Basketball played a pair of NAIA opponents this week and dropped close contests to Biola (73-70) and Westmont (77-69). Jake Klewer ’14 had a big day with 18 points and 11 rebounds against Biola, but did not play against Westmont, while John Weiss ’14 took over the offensive load with 21 points and eight rebounds. The Sagehens will be in action this week at the David Wells Classic, hosting UC Santa Cruz on Friday and facing Johns Hopkins at CMS on Saturday. The Pomona-Pitzer Women’s Basketball team (which had its lone game of the week at Hope International postponed) will host Linfield on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and then face UC Santa Cruz at CMS on Friday and host Arizona Christian on Saturday.
