JungHae Kim, Harpsichord, and Joshua Lee, Viola da Gamba, to Perform Baroque Concert on Oct. 25
Pomona College’s Department of Music presents a program of Baroque music with two acclaimed performers – JungHae Kim, harpsichord, and Joshua Lee, viola da gamba – on Friday, October 25, at 8 p.m. in Bridges Hall of Music (150 E. Fourth St., Claremont).
Kim’s playing – described as inspired, regal, warm and inviting – blends sparkling virtuoso technique with a gentle and lyrical sensibility. New York Arts recently raved that her playing was “supple, expressive and impressive.” Kim has performed as a soloist throughout the United States, Europe and in Asia and with numerous historical instrument ensembles including American Baroque, Brandywine Baroque and Ensemble Mirable. She has also appeared as a soloist with some of California’s premier ensembles including the San Francisco Symphony and the New Century Chamber Orchestra. She holds a bachelor’s degree in harpsichord performance from the Peabody Conservatory, and a master’s degree in historical performance in harpsichord from the Oberlin Conservatory. She completed her studies with Gustav Leonhardt in Amsterdam on a Haskell Scholarship, receiving an advanced degree in harpsichord performance from Amsterdam’s Sweelinck Conservatorium.
Cited for his stylish and soulful playing, Lee performs on viols and double bass with some of the world’s leaders in period music. Founder of Ostraka, Lee is a member of Musica Pacifica, Les Délices, and The Two, and has performed with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Boston Early Music Festival, Orchester Wiener Akademie, Carmel Bach Festival and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. His performances have been heard on NPR’s Performance Today and Harmonia, and Österreichischen Rundfunk, and he has recordings on Dorian, Koch International, Magnatune, Bear Machine and Reference Recordings labels. Praised as “a master of the score’s wandering and acrobatic itinerary” by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Lee teaches at workshops across the country and has been a guest instructor at San Francisco Conservatory, University of California, Berkeley and Peabody Conservatory.
