Photography Exhibition Curated by Museum Director Kathleen Howe Subject of L.A. Times Article
A Los Angeles Times article on a new photography exhibition curated by Kathleen Stewart Howe, director of the Pomona College Museum of Art and professor of art history, looks at the difficulties that faced early photographers as they rushed to the Holy Lands to photograph Biblical landscapes. Oftentimes, the desert landscapes greeting them did not match the imagery of the collective imagination. ""They encountered the fact that this incredibly important … land didn't have a lot of appeal in a photograph," says Howe in the article. The exhibition, In Search of Biblical Lands: From Jerusalem to Jordan in 19th Century Photography, opened last Wednesday at the Getty Villa in Los Angeles.
