Writer-in-Residence Verlyn Klinkenborg '74 Writes Essay on Graduation for New York Times

Author, essayist and frequent contributor to the New York Times Verlyn Klinkenborg '74 writes poignantly of the bittersweetness of graduation for both students and the professors who are seeing them off. Klinkenborg, a visiting writer-in-residence at Pomona College, taught Literary Non-Fiction and Advanced Composition: The Literary Essay; or, Writing the World this past semester. In "One Final Evening," published in the New York Times on May 17, he writes, "I have never had children, so, for me, there is something a little extra in coming to semester’s end with the students I’ve taught. Week by week, I watch their thoughts get clearer and clearer until, suddenly, my students are able to say things we can no longer quite account for. One by one, they come into focus, to me and to each other, in their writing."
