An Op-Ed on Disaster Preparedness by Professor Tahir Andrabi Appears in "The Boston Globe"
Professor of Economics Tahir Andrabi co-authored with Asim Ijaz Khwaja, "Responding to natural disasters - Can we act in time?," an op-ed piece in the January 20th edition of the Boston Globe on the need for a strong information-based technological response to largescale disasters like the Haiti earthquake. Andrabi and Khwaja, along with Jishnu Das at the World Bank, were part of a team that that developed RISEPAK, a web-based portal that provided localized information to coordinate relief after the 2005 Pakistan earthquake.
Andrabi and Khwaja urge that an open-access web portal for the entire globe be established because "as we are seeing tragically in Haiti, coordinating disaster relief is a daunting task. A Web-based data portal that combines the global knowledge network with local and community information and which is activated the minute a disaster hits can be of immense value. The payoff directly translates into lives saved for a bargain price."
