Major Gifts

"We have received so much in return from supporting Pomona. We have an opportunity to meet the faculty who receive support from our faculty grant fund that helps underwrite projects ranging from research in English literature to astronomy. We always leave Pomona after a visit excited and impressed by the quality and diversity of the work being done by the faculty."
David '59 and Susan '61 Hoffman Hirsch

A Tradition of Giving

In 1897, 10 years after Pomona College formally opened its doors, The Student Life heralded joyful news with the headline - "$100,000, Pomona's First Endowment Secured." Thus was born the critical role philanthropy played, and continues to play, in securing the future of the College.

Today, 120 years later, the staff in the Office of Major Gifts works with alumni, parents and friends of the College who are as passionate about our mission as the earliest founders were and want to continue the tradition of giving with outright gifts of $100,000 or more. These "legacy" gifts establish endowments for student scholarships or provide departmental and research support funds. Major gifts can also directly support the College's efforts to build new facilities, revitalize existing ones, continue offering small classes with dedicated faculty and provide challenging opportunities for students to explore the world around them through internships and study abroad.

Leadership gifts of this nature are critical to the College's long-term success in recruiting gifted faculty who want to teach and conduct cutting edge research, strengthening our physical plant to include premier research facilities and teaching classrooms, along with maintaining the important nature and character of our residential college environment.

Investing in Pomona's Future

It is the income we receive each year from these endowed funds, coupled with outright major and annual gifts, which allows us to grow as a leading liberal arts college. We would not be the College we are today without the generous support of our major donors who want to invest in excellence at the level Pomona provides. We are grateful for all who have made major commitments to Pomona and for all who are considering doing so.
