Pomona
College Ranked No. 5 In U.S. News & World Report
|
 |
Pomona College is ranked fifth among all liberal arts
colleges in America by U.S. News & World Report in
the magazine's 2005 guide to “America's Best Colleges.”
Pomona College also ranked third in selectivity; fourth in
“great schools, great prices”; fifth in graduation rate; and
16th in diversity of its student body.
In the most recent survey of the nation’s 217 liberal arts
colleges, released on August 20, Pomona tied for the fifth
place spot with Carleton College in Minnesota. Williams
College (MA) was ranked first, followed by Amherst College
(MA) and Swarthmore College (PA) tied at second, and
Wellesley College (MA) at fourth.
In the previous 10 years of the U.S. News survey, the
college has finished fifth eight times, along with one
fourth-place and one seventh-place ranking.
Pomona College administrators were pleased to be again named
among the nation’s leading small liberal arts colleges. “I’m
delighted that the excellence of Pomona College has once
again been recognized by U.S. News and World Report
in their annual survey," said David Oxtoby, Pomona's
president. “The continued high ranking of Pomona College
among national liberal arts colleges reaffirms the
excellence of the education that we offer, with small
classes, close relationships between faculty and students,
and a lively and attractive campus close to a vital urban
center.”
Pomona College is the founding member of The Claremont
Colleges, a consortium of five independent undergraduate and
two graduate institutions, that did particularly well in the
U.S. News rankings. Among the other members of the
consortium to be named, Claremont McKenna College tied for
13th; Harvey Mudd College tied for 16th; Scripps College
tied for 26th; and Pitzer College tied at 59th.
Pomona College also made news recently as a result of a
national college student poll conducted by Princeton Review.
According to the 2005 edition of their book The Best 357
Colleges, Pomona students as a group are the happiest to be
found at any of America's top colleges and universities. The
Princeton survey was based on questionnaires from more than
110,000 students who rated their own schools and college
experiences in a variety of categories ranging from
academics to campus life. Pomona was also ranked 6th in the
category “Students Happy with Financial Aid,” 7th in
“schools that run like butter” and 11th for “dorms like
palaces.”
“The two rankings released this week provide an interesting
juxtaposition,” noted President Oxtoby. “Our students attend
one of the most selective and challenging colleges in the
country, with a rich and varied curriculum, but they are
also among the happiest students in the country. This simply
goes to show that at Pomona College education is fun!”
