Community Health Fair at Pomona College To Provide Medical Assistance for Low-Income Families

Pomona College will host its first Annual Community Health and Awareness Fair on Saturday April 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Health Fair will feature a variety of prominent community-based organizations that serve low-income families and address health issues in culturally diverse communities. Medical evaluations, informational pamphlets, insurance consultations, and translators will be available.

Representatives from Molina Healthcare, Bienestar, Healthy Net, GEM project (Citrus Valley Health Partners), PAL for Health/ALAS para tu Salud, Pomona Valley Low-Income Services (PVLIS), and Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center will provide blood pressure and cholesterol evaluations, body mass index tests, and educational material covering a variety of health concerns. Mother’s Nutritional Center, the Foothill AIDS Project, and the Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team will be present.

Dental technicians from San Joaquin Valley College will provide dental care demonstrations for children. Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches will be registering bone marrow donors to add to their database.

The Health Fair is free of charge and open to the public. The event will take place in the Pomona College Smith Campus Center, 170 E. Sixth St., Claremont. It is organized and sponsored by the Pomona College Asian American Resource Center (AARC) and Pomona Valley Low Income Services (PVLIS). For more information on the Community Health and Awareness Fair, call (909) 621-8639.

“Language differences and economic status can and do make it harder for lower income families to get information on preventable health issues,” explains Mana Hayakawa, assistant director of AARC. “The goal of the Health Fair is to bridge those issues and bring people in our community the information they need.”

PVLIS is a non-profit organization offering free referral and case management services to local low-income and un-housed adults and families. It was founded in 2002 by two Pomona College students, David Henderson and Gechter, who are now seniors at the college. PVLIS services include referring clients to eligible government, counseling and health programs for which they qualify.

Pomona College is one of the nation’s premier liberal arts institutions, offering a comprehensive program in the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Its hallmarks include small classes, close relationships between students and faculty, and a range of opportunities for student research. Visit Pomona College on the web at www.pomona.edu.
