Barber, Author & Political Theorist, To Discuss
Democratic Responses to Terrorism At Pomona College |

Internationally renowned author and political theorist
Benjamin R. Barber will discuss “Democratic Responses to
Terrorism in a World of Interdependence,” on Thursday,
November 11, at 11a.m., at Pomona College.
Dr. Barber is the author of 17 books including the classic
"Strong Democracy" (1984, 2d ed. 2004), the international
best-seller "Jihad vs. McWorld" (1995, 2d ed. 2001,
translated into twenty languages), "Fear’s Empire: War,
Terrorism and Democracy" (2003, with eight foreign
editions), and "The Truth of Power: Intellectual Affairs in
the Clinton White House" (2001). A founding editor and
former editor-in-chief of the international quarterly
Political Theory, he also writes for Harper's Magazine, The
New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The
Nation, El Pais and other publications.
A principal of the Democracy Collaborative, Barber is the
Gershon and Carol Kekst Professor of Civil Society and a
Distinguished University Professor at the University of
Maryland. He consults regularly with political and civic
leaders in the United States and Europe, including former
President Bill Clinton, former Senator Bill Bradley and
former President Roman Herzog of Germany. He has also
consulted with the Corporation for National Service, the
United States Information Agency, the National Endowment for
the Humanities; and in Europe, with UNESCO, the European
Parliament, the Swedish Parliamentary Commission on
Democracy and "Mission 2000" (the French Millennial
Commission).
Barber has been honored for his work with a knighthood (Palmes
Academiques/Chevalier) from the French Government (2001),
the Berlin Prize of the American Academy of Berlin (2001)
and the John Dewey Award (2003). He has also been awarded
Guggenheim, Fulbright, and Social Science Research
Fellowships; and honorary doctorates from Grinnell College,
Monmouth University and Connecticut College. In 1991-92, he
held the chair of American Civilization at the Ecole des
Hautes Etudes in Paris. He holds a certificate from the
London School of Economics and Political Science and earned
his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University.
