Pulitzer-Prize Winning Novelist Edward P. Jones to Give
Reading at Pomona College
|
 |
Edward P. Jones, a 2004 Pulitzer Prize award winner for his
debut novel The Known World, will read from his work
at Pomona College on Wednesday, October 5 as part of the
College’s 2005-2006 Literary Series.
Born
and raised in Washington, D.C., Jones received the
Pen/Hemingway Award for his first book, Lost in the City,
a collection of short stories published in 1992 that was
also nominated for the National Book Award. Lost in the
City is set in the nation’s capital, Jones’ birthplace,
and this praised collection takes the reader into the lives
of African-American men and women who work against the
constant threat of loss to maintain a sense of hope.
In The Known World, Henry Townsend is a former slave
who becomes a slave owner. Jones moves seamlessly between
the past, the future and back again to the present, weaving
together the lives of freed and enslaved blacks, whites, and
Indians – allowing for a deeper understanding of the world
created by the institution of slavery.
Critical praise was lavish for The Known World, which
was also short-listed for the National Book Award. Time
magazine called it “magisterial.” It was described as
“stunning” by The New York Times. The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution wrote that Jones’ novel was,
"brilliant...glorious...[The Known World] belongs on the
shelf with other classics of slavery, like Toni Morrison’s
Beloved. The New Yorker described it as “a book of
tremendous moral intricacy.”
Jones’ reading, which begins at 7:30 p.m., is free and open
to the public and will be held in the Ena Thompson Reading
Room in Crookshank Hall (Room 108, 140 W. 6th Street,
Claremont). For further information, contact the Pomona
College Department of English at (909) 607-2212.
