"Keys to
the Koop: Humor and Satire in Contemporary Printmaking"
Opens at the Pomona College Museum of Art |

Pomona College Museum of Art presents "Keys to the Koop:
Humor and Satire in Contemporary Printmaking," an exhibition
of 60 works from 16 contemporary artists who find humor and
satire in contemporary art, fashion, food and popular
culture. The exhibit will be on view from Aug.23 through
Oct. 9, with an opening reception at the museum from 4 p.m.
to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10.
This exhibit features art by Mark Bennett, Enrique Chagoya,
Roy DeForest, Tony Fitzpatrick, Ellen Gallagher, David
Gilhooly, Red Grooms, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Roy
Lichtenstein, Gene McMahon, Claes Oldenburg, Tad Savinar,
Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker and William Wegman.
From the earliest satirical explorations of love and
marriage by 15th-century Dutch printmaker Israhel van
Meckenem, to contemporary artistsı use of wit and satire to
navigate the complexity of modern life, artists play the
role of social critic.
Printmakers especially have deployed their medium -- already
linked to mass communication -- to amuse their audience
while commenting on their cultural moment. Frequently they
deflate the pretensions of the art world they inhabit.
Roy Lichtenstein recasts Edvard Munchıs ³The Scream² for the
comic book character Sweet Pea; David Gilhooly instructs on
how to draw Jackson Pollockıs dog, and Claes Oldenborg
imagines Picassoıs cufflink.
Other artists ask us to reconsider clichés of contemporary
thought: the facile division of the left-brain and
right-brain is explored by Tad Savinar.
Jeff Koons and Mark Bennett make art that springs from the
collective experience of popular culture - the worlds of
musical entertainment and television sitcoms.
Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, and Enrique Chagoya use satire
to address the decidedly non-humorous subjects of racism and
colonization.
Artist Mark Bennett will give a public lecture at the museum
on October 4,
2005 at 4:15 p.m.
The exhibition is touring with stops in Oregon, California,
Idaho, and Washington.
A brochure with essays by Art Gym Director and Curator Terri
Hopkins and the Hallie Ford Museumıs Director John Olbrantz
is available. Teaching resource materials for area schools
are also available.
"Keys to the Koop" has been made possible by a major grant
from the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation and is drawn
from their collection. It is co-organized by the Schnitzer
Family Foundation, Art Gym at Marylhurst University and the
Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University.
The Pomona College Museum of Art, formerly the Montgomery
Art Gallery, is located at 330 N. College Avenue, Claremont.
The museum is open to the public and free of charge, Tuesday
through Friday, from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday
from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, call (909) 621-8283
