Four
Pomona Students Awarded Goldwater Scholarships |
 |
Four Pomona College students – Charles S. Hummel, Andrew G.
Lytle, Paul J. Robustelli and Alan W. Tarr – are recipients
of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for 2005-06.
The scholarship program honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater
was designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue
careers in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. A
Goldwater scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees,
books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per
year.
Charles Hummel, a chemistry major from South Pasadena, CA,
plan to pursue an M.D./Ph.D. in medicine and biochemistry,
and then conduct research medicine and teaching at a
university hospital. Andrew Lytle, a molecular biology major
from West Bloomfield, MI, intends to earn a M.D./Ph.D.
degree in immunology and work for a government research
program or private corporation. Paul Robustelli, a chemistry
major from Cross River, NY, plans to obtain a Ph.D. in
physical chemistry or biophysics and become a professor at a
major research institution. Alan Tarr, a pure
mathematics/physics major from Moraga, CA, intends to attend
graduate school in mathematics, preferably to study
topology, and is considering a career in teaching or
research.
This year 320 college sophomores and juniors throughout the
United States received Goldwater Scholarships. Goldwater
Scholars are selected annually on the basis of academic
merit from a field of more than 1,000 students majoring in
mathematics, science and engineering who are nominated by
the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.
Colleges are allowed to nominate up to four students. For
2005-2006, Pomona is one of only 13 colleges that had all
four of its nominees selected.
Pomona College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts
institutions, offers a comprehensive program in the arts,
