Pomona
College Junior Receives Beinecke Scholarship To Pursue
Graduate Degree in Social Psychology
|
 |
Angela Nierman, a Pomona College junior, has been awarded
the highly selective Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarship.
She is one of just 18 juniors nationwide to be awarded the
scholarship, which provides up to $30,000 for study toward a
doctorate in humanities, arts and social sciences.
Professor Jack Abecassis, chair of Pomona’s Romance
Languages and Literatures Department and faculty liaison for
the Beinecke Scholarship, expressed great confidence in
Nierman’s chances of receiving the award. “She has
impressive rhetorical and logical ability and wonderful
poise and presence,” he noted.
At Pomona, Nierman has worked with faculty on research
examining parental storytelling styles and the impact on
their child’s social ability, and on a study involving the
personality traits of people who frequently use cell phones
while driving. She is also a student liaison and a teaching
assistant for the Department of Psychology.
In summer 2004, Nierman received a Psi Chi Summer Research
Grant to work on a self-designed project with Angela Bryan
at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Her study focused on
the role of culture and gender differences in evaluating
attitudes toward homosexuals. Nierman plans to extend the
project by translating her survey into Spanish and
collecting more data with a sample of Chilean participants
while studying at the Pontificia Catolica University in
Santiago, Chile this semester.
Nierman’s future plans include applying to doctoral programs
in social psychology, possibly at Harvard, Michigan and
Princeton. She is the daughter of Glenn and Shari Nierman,
who are residents of Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Beinecke Scholarships are intended “to encourage and
enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities
available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a
graduate course of study.” In the past five years, Pomona
College has had four Beinecke scholarship winners.
Pomona College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts
institutions, offers a comprehensive program in the arts,
humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Its
hallmarks include small classes, close relationships between
students and faculty, and a range of opportunities for
student research. Visit Pomona College on the Web at
