The author's inventive and flamboyant use of Spanglish, and her adaptation of the confessional "crónica" make the memoir compelling, powerful and timely. One of the book’s chronicles, “Anniversary Crónica,” was awarded First Prize in Personal Memoir in the “Chicano Literary Excellence Contest” sponsored by the U.S. national literary magazine el Andar. “With the book,” says Chávez-Silverman, “I wanted to prove that literary language could be created switching back and forth between two languages.
