Join us to Celebrate Founders Day!

On Founders Day, Sunday, October 14, 2012, Pomona College will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its founding with a party and open house on campus between 1 and 5 p.m. We hope you’ll join us for an afternoon of music and dance performances by faculty and students, a special orchestra concert, tours, activities, rides, refreshments and entertainment for all ages. The day’s events have been planned with families in mind.

Milestone celebrations like this tend to focus on founders—those determined individuals who first encountered the desert landscape that was Claremont in 1887, imagined a college here, and possessed the determination to make that vision a reality. Pomona College was founded by that small and dedicated community, and its history is the story of ever expanding communities—of scholars, students, staff, faculty, alumni, and equally of civic and educational institutions near and far. Each of you is an important part of that community, and we hope you will be part of the celebration!

Founders Day will conclude with a special picnic supper, a dance band and, of course, a birthday cake. The dining halls will be closed to enable the entire College community to attend. In order to estimate numbers, we are requesting reservations for supper. If you and your family plan to come, please register here.

Further details about the day’s events can be found at www.pomona.edu/125.

Coming October 14: The Interactive Timeline of Pomona College History

You are part of Pomona College history, and soon, as part of the celebration of Pomona’s 125th year, you’ll have a special opportunity to share your part of that history with your classmates and other members of the college family. The Interactive Timeline of Pomona College History—the first installment of which will go live on the Pomona Web on Oct. 14—will enable you to explore different eras of Pomona history, browse through galleries of period photos, watch video interviews, submit your own photos, and share your personal memories by adding them directly to any year. The first installment of the timeline will cover the first 100 years of Pomona College history. Then, beginning the following week, we will roll out the last quarter century of Pomona’s history—from 1988 to 2012—one year at a time.  Each week for 25 weeks, we will feature a new year and invite alumni who were here to a sneak preview, so that they can add their memories before the page goes live. As the timeline unfolds, we hope you’ll check in periodically and join in building this interactive celebration of Pomona’s extraordinary history. In the meantime, be sure to check out the other parts of our 125th Anniversary celebration online at www.pomona.edu/125.

News from Career Development

We all know the importance of research and networking in the career exploration process. Alumni play a key role with current students as they look at possible career paths. The ways in which students and alumni connect are varied – but we would like to highlight two opportunities that enable you to connect with and be a resource for current students and other Pomona alumni.

Linkedin Groups: Pomona College Career Connections
Linkedin provides many opportunities for people to connect professionally and here at the CDO we teach students how to use Linkedin in a variety of ways. Linkedin is not just a tool for networking, but can also be used to explore career paths, identify interesting organizations, research graduate programs and where people go from them, etc. The CDO uses Linkedin (along with the college database) to find people to speak on campus, be a part of a panel, or to refer students to for informational interviews and possible job shadows such as the Shadow a Sagehen program over winter break. If you haven’t become a part of the Linkedin community, we invite you to set up your own profile (it’s free!) and check out these helpful tutorials on how to use this tool in your own networking and career development. We also invite you to join the Pomona College Career Connections Linkedin Group so that students may learn from your career path and experience beyond the gates! If you have questions, please contact Kerry Martin, Assistant Director of Career Development.

Got Jobs? Want to hire a Pomona student?
Pomona College is part of two liberal arts consortia: SLAC (Selective Liberal Arts Consortium) and CIC (College Internship Consortium) that coordinate internship and job interviews over winter break in six major cities. Students can apply for specific opportunities in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York City, Boston, and Washington, DC. If your organization would like to recruit and interview students from Pomona College and our peer institutions, and reap the benefits of hiring the brightest and the best, contact Gene Rhee, Associate Director of Employer Relations and Experiential Learning, for more information. Participation deadline is soon – Don’t delay!

Alumni Career Services and Recruiting Programs:
If you need assistance with graduate school or career transitions or if you would like to post an opportunity for fellow Sagehens, please contact the Career Development Office at 909-621-8144 or check out the resources at www.pomona.edu/cdo. We look forward to working with you.

Athletics Update

The fall season is in full swing for Pomona-Pitzer athletics, with Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Volleyball already almost halfway through their SCIAC schedules, and Football, Men’s Water Polo and Cross Country poised to begin their conference competitions.  The Men’s Water Polo team has been profiled in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin for its exceptionally difficult early-season schedule, with all 11 of its September matches coming against teams ranked in the national top 20, including seven in the top 10 (two against No. 1 USC and one against No. 2 UCLA), while senior running back Luke Sweeney was also the subject of a Daily Bulletin feature after his record-breaking junior year. Meanwhile, senior All-American Annie Lydens has begun her quest for a national cross country championship with a fifth-place finish (first among Division III competitors) at the UC Riverside Invitational, while a very young Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team (the top nine hitters are all freshmen and sophomores) recently earned the most exciting win of the fall thus far with a big five-set victory against Whittier.
