Daring Minds
Faculty Lecture Professor Emerita Monique Saigal's latest book, French Heroines 1940-1945: Courage, Strength and Ingenuity, shares the stories of 18 women in the French Resistance who stood out because of their extraordinary courage. Catholic, Jewish or Protestant- they transcend religions in the name of a common ideal. Her talk will feature a video of her time as a hidden child as well of some of the women she interviewed. Professor Saigal, a Holocaust survivor herself, was taken in as a child by a Catholic family in 1942 and wanted to honor these women as well as her grandmother, who perished at Auschwitz. Eager to discover the secrets of other women in the Resistance, she crisscrossed France, Switzerland and California to hear them tell their own stories.
