Oversees all internal and external faculty research and travel
grants including budget management. Acts as liaison with Business
Office and Institutional Advancement in tracking and reporting of
all grant and research expenditures. Facilitates the
Summer
Undergraduate Research Program, and supports the academic
leave program.

With the Dean of the College, manages the faculty reappointment,
tenure and promotion review process and oversees the
recruitment of temporary faculty.
Serves on the Faculty Personnel Committee, WASC, and Emergency
Preparedness Committees and supports the Cabinet, Cabinet Agenda
Committee, Emeriti Committee, and Wig Fund for Teaching Committee.
Administers the Wig Distinguished Professorship awards as well as
funds for
curriculum
development,
teaching innovation,
travel to teaching conferences,
faculty auditing,
teaching with technology, and other teaching-related activities.
Other responsibilities include overseeing the Dean’s staff, editing
the
Faculty Handbook, and
serving as liaison with ITS for faculty computers.

The Dean of the College is responsible for the quality of the
academic program and for its continuing improvement. The Dean
oversees faculty personnel, actions including recruitment and
reviews for reappointment and promotion. This office also is in
charge of supporting the faculty and the departments/programs with
needed personnel, office space, and material resources. The Dean
also works closely with the President and the Vice-President for
Development in designing new policies and programs and in developing
proposals to prospective donors.
On June 30, 2009, Dean Kates will take a one-year sabbatical and
then join Pomona’s History Department in the Fall of 2010. A search
for his replacement is ongoing.

Responsible for various institutional surveys, questionnaires, and
requests for information about faculty and the academic program of
the College. Monitors and analyzes the faculty salary budget,
prepares faculty contracts, and provides appropriate offices with
new hire information. Edits the
Department Chair and Program
Coordinator Handbook and the faculty section of the Pomona
College Catalog. Assists the Dean in faculty personnel matters. Also
staffs the Academic Affairs Committee and Honorary Degrees Committee
of the Board of Trustees, the Faculty Position Advisory Committee
and faculty meetings.
Cynthia Selassie

Responsible for assisting faculty with research and scholarly
development. Chairs the Faculty Research Committee and oversees the
funding of internal programs and
external government and non-government grant applications. Acts as
the faculty liaison for academic space allocations on campus, as
well as building projects in the sciences. Handles requests for academic
leaves and for
student/faculty
collaborative research programs. Oversees regulatory
issues associated with human subjects, chemical hygiene and
biosafety, and radiation safety. Also a member of the Board of
Trustees’ Buildings and Grounds Committee, the Institutional Review
Board, the Radiation Safety Committee and the Animal Welfare and Use
Committee.
