Sophomore Reorientation

Saturday, February 1, 2014

The sophomore year sometimes suffers from “middle child” syndrome—not as exciting as freshman year, not as focused as junior or senior year, it is sometimes written off as just another year to complete. Moreover, it’s a year when some students experience a “Sophomore Slump”, feeling dissatisfied, lacking direction, or even tempted to leave college. Yet the sophomore year is critical for making important academic and personal decisions. Sophomores need to choose their majors, explore opportunities on and off campus, and learn about post-graduation options—all of which can be daunting to face alone.

The CDO recognizes these challenges and sees sophomore year as an opportunity for students to gather together and rediscover the resources Pomona offers to help them move forward into their junior and senior years. With the help of the Sophomore Class Committee, Alumni Association, and several campus departments, the CDO will host a one-day Reorientation program to inspire and support sophomores. By attending presentations, workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, students will develop a stronger sense of their goals and the next steps they need to take to achieve them. Workshop facilitators and local alumni are enthusiastic about dedicating part of their Saturday to help the class of 2016 at this midpoint in their education.
