Welcome First Year Students

Mary Raymond- CDO Director

And now a word from Ermelinda Villagomez '12

Greetings Sagehens, Freshmen Class!

May I offer yet another welcome to Pomona College? WELCOME!

As a member of the CDO Student Team, I jumped at the opportunity to share my thoughts.  Looking back, I am nostalgic for the significance of my first year experience. The independence from home and all I knew challenged me in ways I didn’t think possible.  It seemed like there was so much to learn, so many people to meet and there were moments when my excitement and nervousness seemed to compete with each other.  I have since mastered laundry, and am so proud to feel that the paths around campus are so familiar. I look at the beautiful buildings where I took classes thinking, was there ever a time that I was not part of this community? I imagine you have questions and concerns about your transition to this new world, but let me reassure you that everything you need is here to discover and learn. Without a doubt, there are dedicated professors and counselors available to help you succeed in every way possible. Pomona College is an ideal place to pursue your interests and discover your passions—both academically and as preparation for whatever you decide to do after college.

To this end, I would like to encourage you to take advantage of the multiple resources available at the CDO. With advice from our amazing counselors, extensive alumni network and online resources, the CDO can help you get started, no matter where you may be headed.  I hope this list of frequently asked questions about the CDO inspires you to make the most of your time at Pomona.

Best of luck,

Ermelinda

Mary Raymond- CDO Director

Greetings to all you wonderful students and your dedicated sponsors who attended our CDO Information Sessions,  sponsored by your Class President  and myself, Mary Raymond, Director of the Career Development Office. Our conversations were the basis of this document and are our attempt to answer at least in part your questions. We look forward to meeting with the remaining sponsor groups in Spring of this year.

These meetings were a new initiative by the CDO, and when other non-first years heard about them, they were wistful not having had the opportunity. We are fortunate at Pomona that every Sagehen hopes to be of assistance to other Sagehens.  This tradition continues far beyond the campus gates, and will remain a resource throughout your career.   But enough about the future, our goal was to assist you in understanding the many resources Pomona has to offer, and to encourage you to seize every opportunity to get involved and learn as much as you can about life, learning and yourself.

Do keep in mind that it is never too soon to think about how you might want to invest your time in your summer following this first year in college.  The Career Staff stands ready to be of assistance so make time to stop by and get to know us.   We will be here for you all the way to making your dreams come true.

Hope to see you soon!
