Finding On-Campus, Tutoring, Part-Time & Seasonal Jobs
Pomona College student employment listings are available on Route 47. Here is some information to help you find opportunities on Route 47:
Login Information: If you don't know your password, you may have your password sent to you by entering your 9 digit student ID in the "Forgot My Password" section of Route 47. If you are a first year student, your Route 47 login information will be sent to you in mid to late August.
Searching for Opportunities: Login to your Route 47 account, and go to Opportunities/Resources. Select “Route 47 Opportunities.” For jobs on the Pomona College Campus ONLY, type Pomona in the "Keyword" box. If you are interested in jobs at any of The Claremont Colleges, leave this box blank. Under “Position Type” select the type of position for which you are looking (NOTE: Pomona does not differentiate between work-study and non-work study. All Pomona students are eligible for all on-campus jobs on the Pomona campus.)
On-Campus Work-Study vs. Off-Campus Work Study: Pomona’s Financial Aid office has relationships with local non-profits where you can also use your work allotment. To search for these positions, select “Off-Campus Work Study” under Position Type.
Timelines: Most positions are posted and filled in September/October. Some openings do become available in January/February. There are plenty of on-campus jobs, but make sure to start looking for a position during the first week of classes for the semester.
Looking for more information? Check out the Financial Aid’s website on Student Employment.
Part-Time Employment Off-Campus
There are several part-time positions in the Claremont area for students in addition to student employment. Part-time positions are posted in Route 47, but you may want to go around to local businesses and ask in-person if they have any openings.
CDO Tutoring Program
One of the most popular and best paying options for a part-time job is the CDO Tutoring program. The CDO works with local schools to offer tutoring jobs to Pomona students. This is a great opportunity to earn some money on a flexible schedule.
Pay rates: You can generally ask for $15 per hour. Current tutors have suggested asking toward the high end initially then you have negotiating room.
How to get the job: Log on to Route 47 (on the right of your screen) to review tutoring listings. Most families leave a phone number where you can call them to express your interest. When contacting the family, be courteous and be honest about your experience. When you call, you can say “My name is_____________ and I was given this referral by the Pomona College Career Development Office.” Professional, business-like messages are best if you need to leave a message. Be sure to leave your telephone number and the best time to reach you. If you are leaving your cell phone number, make sure your voicemail represents you as a responsible person. Return telephone messages promptly if you are serious about being hired.
Places to meet with your tutees: Several places have been used, study lounges in Walker, Harwood, Oldenborg Library, areas in the Smith Campus Center & the Claremont Public Library. Some parents will offer to pick you up and bring you to their home and others will require you to drive to their home (if you have transportation).
Tutoring special needs: When assisting students with special needs such as Attention Deficient Disorder, ESL (English as a Second Language), etc., patience is a primary prerequisite. Experience working with such problems is valuable and necessary.
