from the Pomona College
Career Development Office,
I am writing to introduce you to the career services your student can rely upon in maximizing their liberal arts education and to let you know ways in which you can be of assistance. Surveys show that parents play a more influential role in their children's career decision-making process than ever before. A parent offers years of professional experience, connections, and sound advice for students entering the professional realm for the first time.
We believe the sooner students visit our office and schedule time with a counselor, they can begin to think about the options they have for using their time outside of class. It is true that Pomona has much to offer in athletics, co-curricular, and community engagement- each offering opportunities for developing leadership skills. We encourage students to pursue activities that are of particular interest to them since it is possible to learn from every experience. In addition, we are very proud of the Pomona College Internship Program, which provides students with the support they need to pursue an internship during the academic year.
Keep in mind that by encouraging your son or daughter to seek meaningful summer internships, you increase the chances that he or she will find early career satisfaction. It's a great way to get a realistic perspective of careers students might be considering, and to learn early on if an industry or field is a good match for their skills and personalities. Urge them as well to maximize the use of their winter and spring breaks. Those present great opportunities for a short internship, informational interviews and even shadowing experiences with alumni.
Whatever dream our students may have for life after college, we can assist in making it a reality. What's more, we help our graduates for a lifetime — Pomona graduates can take advantage of our services at anytime in their adult lives. We welcome all and any internships and job postings you might have access to that we can share with students. In the meantime, should you have questions that I or a member of the Career staff can answer, please do not hesitate to contact me.
