Pomona College Politics Department

Politics Department Website

The Department of Politics offers courses in the principal subfields of the discipline: American politics and law, comparative and international politics, and political theory. A number of student-faculty research projects are carried out each year and many students participate in legislative intern-ships in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento. Study abroad is another popular option for majors.

All faculty engage in teaching, scholarship, and advising. Lorn Foster writes and teaches about electoral behavior and policy preferences of ethnic minorities in the U.S.

Justin Crowe studies the Supreme Court, the Constitution, and American political development. Elizabeth Crighton specializes in European politics and comparative ethnic nationalism. David Elliott, a specialist in Vietnam and China, studies both the Vietnamese revolution and the Cambodian conflict. David Arase's fields of interest are Japanese politics, East Asian relations, and international political economy.

John Seery teaches and writes on issues of political theory and philosophy. David Menefee-Libey focuses on American political parties and the politics of education. Susan McWilliams studies political theory, from ancient times to the present. Rick Worthington focuses on public policy issues, including science, technology and the environment.

Heather Williams focuses her research on global politics of food and agriculture, and the political economy of Latin America. Pierre Englebert concentrates his teaching and research on quantitative methods, as well as state formation and institutions of African nations.

Politics majors at Pomona enter many fields, including law, government service, business, and journalism. Some of their wide-ranging occupations have included news broadcasting for CBS, writing for Newsweek, serving as national executive director of the League of Women Voters, practicing law for the U.S. Department of Justice, serving as chief administrator of the U.S. International Trade Commission, and serving in the California State Senate.
