Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary program that emphasizes analytical approaches to the culture, history, society, and political economy of the region. This concentration provides significant preparation to students pursuing careers in public policy, law, business, social work, education, international relations, and advanced research.
The major offers interdisciplinary training in the major areas of Latin American culture, combining language study, the humanities, and the social sciences. Core courses in history, literature, music and politics develop a base for understanding the life of the region. Majors also choose electives from a list that includes offerings in art, economics, and sociology, and additional work in the core disciplines. A semester of study in Latin America is strongly recommended.
The program regularly sponsors a Latin American lecture series that attracts prominent scholars in the field.
