The German Studies major is the interdisciplinary study of the contemporary cultural, social, economic, and political life of the German-speaking peoples in their historical and international context. The German Studies Program in Claremont is an intercollegiate major that is administered by German faculty of Pomona, Claremont McKenna, and Scripps colleges, and which includes courses from six Claremont institutions. The concentration has two parts: 1) a set of core courses, specifically on German cultures(s) and taught by members of the German faculty, and 2) a large selection of associated courses, taught by faculty members from other departments, each of which illuminates some specific aspect of German cultures(s) from the point of view of disciplines ranging from economics to music.
Pomona has a longstanding tradition of strong commitment to the study of Central and Eastern Europe, and the end of the Cold War has only served to increase the importance of and the interest in this region.
The European unification process is creating a new economic power block, and the globalization of business is ensuring that American as well as foreign firms will increasingly have international aspects. This will have a greater impact on American business, society, and politics. The prominence of Germany in these changes in Europe, not only in the European Union but also in the developing areas of the former Communist union block and the new states emerging from the Soviet Union, means that knowledge of the German language and of Germany itself will be a benefit to citizens of the United States in the next century.
