Meet a favorite author at Vroman’s Bookstore.
 This independent bookstore in Pasadena is the place for celebrity book
signings in Southern California. From Hillary Clinton to Rudy Gulliani,
from George Foreman to Julia Child, Vroman’s gets the big names and big
crowds. Isabelle Allende, Stephen Ambrose, Michael Crichton, Maxine Hong
Kingston and Frank McCourt are just some of the writers who have signed
their books here.
But the biggest crowd—7,000 people—came out for radio
shock jock Howard Stern about a decade ago. “It’s a legend around the
store,” says Maret Orliss, assistant promotional director for Vroman’s.
The biggest signings are held away from the store at nearby colleges or
churches for extra space. Vroman’s bills itself as the largest and
oldest independent bookstore in Southern California, dating back 110
years. (You may feel like the wait is almost that long if you show up
for a big-name celebrity signing.) But several signings by lesser-known
authors are offered each week.
