Hit the slopes at a local ski resort.
The San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains are more than a dramatic
backdrop for foothill towns such as Claremont. Winter brings skiing and
snowboarding close to campus. For the scoop on local ski resorts, we
turned to Tom Elgin ’05, director of On The Loose, the outdoors club for
the Claremont Colleges.
Mt. Baldy: Only half an hour from campus, Mt. Baldy offers steep and
varied terrain. Only a few runs are groomed, but Elgin finds the sparse
forests are perfect for making your own trails.
Bear Mountain/ Snow Summit: These resorts in Big Bear are both run by
the same company, but each resort has its own emphasis. Bear Mountain is
heavy on freestyle terrain, with plentiful jumps and a 15-foot halfpipe
for snowboarders. Elgin reports that Snow Summit is better for
beginners, as it is less steep and offers a family fun park with smaller
jumps.
Mountain High: Elgin finds this is a good all-around resort. Trails are
varied, though they’re not as steep as some resorts. Mountain High also
offers a decent-sized terrain park with a small halfpipe.
