Major Selection
Students are required to select a major by the end of the sophomore year.
To declare a major, the student presents a major declaration form to the Office
of the Registrar. If the student’s advisor is not in the major department, the
department or program chair must sign the major declaration form. Students are
not required to have an advisor in the major department, but are strongly encouraged to do so.

Minors
Pomona offers a minor in each academic department and in many interdisciplinary
programs. A minor is optional. Minor requirements are listed in the catalog.
Students interested in completing a minor should contact the department or program
offering the minor. When the minor has been completed, the student presents a copy
of his/her unofficial transcript and a completed Minor Application Form to the minor
department/program for approval. The signed form is then submitted to the Office of
the Registrar. The minor appears on the student’s academic transcript after it has been
completed. Students may not minor in a subject area that overlaps with the student’s major.
Many departments/programs have specific regulations concerning what combinations of
major and minor cannot be completed; in cases where specific combinations have not
been described, it is up to the major and minor department/program to decide whether
the combination is allowable.

Special Majors
Pomona College offers a special major option for students who feel that they cannot
meet their educational objectives through one of the established majors and/or minors.
To complete a special major, the student must form an advisory committee of three
faculty members, two of whom must be Pomona College faculty, with a third member from
Pomona or one of the other Claremont Colleges, as appropriate. Once the committee is
formed and the special major curriculum has been developed, the student must present
the special major proposal to a Special Major committee for approval. Complete
instructions, and forms, for proposing a Special Major are available in the Registrar’s Office.
