The Critical Inquiry seminar introduces first-year students
to our highest educational beliefs: that established truths
and theories should always be interrogated and that students
should develop their skills in thoughtful reading, logical
reasoning and graceful writing. Such skills are crucial for
the intelligent, imaginative pursuit of majors at Pomona and
beyond college.
These seminars bridge the traditional boundaries of academic
disciplines to focus on such special topics as
“Nanotechnology in Science and Fiction” or “The Wellsprings
of Human Courage.”
Enrollment in the seminars is limited to 15, which allows students to work closely with faculty and
peers early on in their college careers. Critical Inquiry strengthens habits of open discussion,
cooperation, and independence, while encouraging students to ask questions and provide answers. They
also learn to utilize the intellectual resources of their faculty and classmates by sharing
multiple perspectives and experiences.
Normally, there are 25 to 30 sections of Critical Inquiry to choose from that vary widely in content, but share
materials and methods from numerous fields of study. Each is taught by a faculty member whose field of
expertise is only a starting point for examining the interdisciplinary relationships that students will
encounter during their four years at Pomona.
