More than three-fourths of Pomona's students participate in
some aspect of international life at the Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages
and International Relations. Each year, around 140 students choose to live in foreign
language sections that are devoted to programs focusing on six cultures and
languages - Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish.
Each language section has a lounge stocked with numerous periodicals and books,
as well as a VCR and TV with Satellite
broadcast for foreign news and other programming. The foreign language sections
are headed by Oldenborg's six native-speaking
Language Residents, who
hold conversation classes and
help organize study breaks and cultural
events for interested students and Oldenborg residents.
Many Pomona students come to Oldenborg to hear guest speakers sponsored by the
International Relations Colloquium, or to
attend Special Dinners
featuring food from different nations and cultures. The
Oldenborg Language Tables Program
allows students, faculty, and staff at all levels of fluency to converse
informally in some 20 languages, including Greek, Hebrew, Hindi-Urdu, Italian,
Portuguese, Korean, Vietnamese, and American Sign Language, in addition to the six
main languages represented in the dormitory.
The Oldenborg Center also has a library, open 24 hours, several ethernet-linked
computers for student use, and an International Theatre, which hosts a nightly
International Film Series and other events.
