| Guidelines
for Use of Pomona College Mailing Lists |
| |
Electronic mailing lists, or listservs, hosted on Pomona College servers are intended to foster communication among and between the
College and its alumni. The College values a diversity of viewpoints and
opinions expressed in an atmosphere of mutual respect. This applies equally to
users of Pomona College mailing lists, and, as such, the College expects community
members to exhibit the same level of respect for others in this forum as in any
other Pomona College-related venue. To that end, all individuals using Pomona
College mailing lists agree to refrain from threatening, hostile or abusive
communications that intimidate, demean or result in injury to another individual
because of personal beliefs or characteristics. These include, but are not
limited to, those relating to race, sex, sexual orientation, age, color,
religion, national origin, disability, or status as a veteran.
While not condoning censorship of any kind, Pomona College does not support
inappropriate use of its mailing lists that include, but is not limited to: 1)
illegal or fraudulent activities; 2) inaccurate implication of endorsement,
approval or sponsorship by Pomona College or any officer, club or department of
the College; or 3) mass distributions (e.g., ads or ‘spamming’) for any
personal, commercial or political activity. While the College reserves the right
to monitor all mailing list activity, it has no plans to do so on a regular basis;
and therefore, it is the responsibility of mailing list users to report any
inappropriate activity to the College.
If the College believes, in its sole discretion, that a user’s participation in
its mailing lists violates the guidelines as outlined above or creates a liability
for Pomona College, the College reserves the right to take any and all actions
it deems necessary. This includes, but is not limited to, denying a user’s
access to Pomona College mailing lists. Pomona College reserves the right to
unilaterally revise the terms of this policy without advance notice.
Use of Pomona College mailing lists constitutes your agreement to abide by these
guidelines.

| Setup a
Mailing List For Your Class |
| |
Each Class Mailing List
must be maintained by a representative from that class, referred
to as the List Owner.
The initial set up for
a mailing list requires a List Owner and a list of 5-10 classmate names and e-mail addresses.
List Owners provide this list of names and e-mail
addresses of classmates who have given permission for their names
to be subscribed to the mailing list. Owners may NOT automatically
subscribe any classmate without their expressed permission. The subscription
process is an automatic operation, so Owners do
not have to manually subscribe new members.
Additionally,
List Owners
need to compose a Welcome Message that new members receive automatically
upon subscribing. A sample welcome message is included at the
bottom of this page.
List Owners
should be prepared to receive and post regular messages to the Class
Mailing List to maintain activity on the list, as well as monitor content on
the list, making sure that messages do not violate the guidelines
outlined above.
Messages posted to the Class Mailing List are distributed to all subscribed members.
Class Mailing Lists are created as "closed" lists meaning
that only subscribed members may post or read posted messages. New
members may subscribe by filling out the form on the
Class Web Pages & Mailing Lists page.

| Support |
| |
In support of Class Mailing Lists, Pomona College will provide a staff member to conduct the initial set up of the
mailing list, as well as to provide technical support to the
Volunteer List Owner.
For questions regarding the mailing lists, please contact Russel
Heskin, Associate Director of Alumni Relations, at
russel.heskin@pomona.edu.

Welcome Letter |
| |
Welcome to the Class of 1949 mailing list.
We are very pleased that you have joined! Messages
from other members of our class will be delivered to your mailbox
automatically, and you can send messages to all of us at once by
addressing your e-mail to:
CLASSOF1949@listserv.pomona.edu
If you want to respond personally to a message posted
by a classmate rather than to the whole list, you can send an e-mail
message to their individual address (which will appear as part of
their message).
Only subscribed members of our class use this mailing list,
so you shouldn't be bothered by unwanted announcements or advertising.
If you know the e-mail addresses of other members
of the class, please send them a message encouraging them to join
too. The More the Merrier!
If you decide to leave the list, either temporarily
or permanently, send an email message to:
Listserv@listserv.pomona.edu
The message should read only:
unsubscribe CLASSOF1949
Use your own four-digit class number.
Leave the Subject line BLANK.
Do not include a signature in the body of your message.
If you have any personal questions or problems with
the list, please e-mail the owner a personal message at: owner@sample.net.
Happy Communicating!!
